Our Story

A little bit of love, a little bit of magic, and a whole lot of nerdiness.

Once upon a time, in a quaint little northern town in England, two people met under the most wholesome of circumstances.

He was a gamer who loved Pokémon, reliving his nostalgic 90s childhood through a newly released mobile game called Pokémon GO.

As he stood outside the old Belgrave Church in his hometown, little did he know that the Lure he'd just placed on the PokéStop would attract something far more special than another Pokémon to catch.

Not long afterwards, three fellow Pokémon GO enthusiasts appeared. As they approached, he recognised one of them as an old school friend. But it was another member of the group who really caught his eye.

A girl who, quite bizarrely, appeared to be dressed as a Pokémon trainer.

He couldn't help but chuckle at the sight of her denim shorts, striped backpack and backwards snapback hat. Was she intentionally cosplaying as Ash Ketchum?

"Hey!" she called, giving him a broad grin.

It wasn't long before they were chatting away like old friends. She assured him that the resemblance to a Pokémon trainer was entirely accidental, which somehow made him like her even more.

Over the following months, the pair found themselves spending more and more time together. Whether it was heading out on long walks catching Pokémon, or meeting friends at their local pub for an evening of chocolate fudge cake instead of ale... because, let's be honest, cake is infinitely better!

What began as a chance encounter quickly became a wonderful friendship.

Eventually, they started spending time together away from their group of friends, until one day, he finally plucked up the courage to ask her on a date.

Naturally, she was delighted to accept.

One date became many, and their friendship blossomed into a relationship that clicked into place more effortlessly than any fae mating bond.

Before long, they'd fallen completely in love and moved into their first little apartment together.

Life was good.

He was progressing in his career as a software developer, while she worked as a kitchen designer and part-time artist. Between work and everyday life, they made the most of every opportunity to indulge in their shared love of gaming, fantasy and all things nerdy.

He even managed to convince her to give PC gaming a try, after countless evenings spent battling each other at Tekken on their console.

They were building a happy little life together.

But sometimes, even the happiest stories take an unexpected turn.

After weeks of debilitating migraines and pushing herself to keep going at work, the girl was admitted to hospital. Eventually, she was diagnosed with a complex, incurable illness that would change both their lives.

With no clear road to recovery, she was forced to give up the career she'd worked so hard for. As their circumstances changed, they also had to say goodbye to the little apartment they'd made their home.

The years that followed were far from easy.

There were countless hospital appointments, difficult days, and more setbacks than either of them could have imagined. As her health declined, so did many of the freedoms and opportunities they'd once taken for granted.

Some friendships faded, and even people close to them struggled to understand the realities of living with chronic illness and disability.

But through it all, they had each other.

He supported her. She supported him. And together, they kept finding reasons to smile, even on the hardest days.

They never stopped dreaming of a future where life might feel a little easier again.

During those difficult years, the girl found comfort in books.

Fantasy novels became her escape; magical worlds filled with dragons, fae and impossible adventures that could, if only for a little while, take her somewhere beyond the pain and uncertainty of everyday life.

Together, they played video games, exploring imaginary worlds and battling their way through survival games that, ironically, sometimes felt easier to survive in than real life.

And when her illness made it difficult to continue creating art using the traditional mediums she'd always loved, she discovered digital illustration and design.

It gave her something she'd been desperately missing.

A creative outlet. A sense of purpose. Something that was hers to build, even when so much else felt beyond her control.

And slowly, an idea began to take shape.

What if they could turn the things they loved into something they could create together?

After all, they were a gamer boy and a bookish girl, united by their love of fantasy, gaming, creativity and everything wonderfully nerdy.

And that's how Mana Merch was born.

What started as a little idea became a shared dream: to build a home for fellow nerds, book lovers, gamers, streamers and wonderfully quirky individuals who aren't afraid to wear their passions proudly.

A place where a love of fictional worlds, late-night gaming sessions, morally grey book boyfriends and obscure fandom references isn't something you have to explain.

Because chances are, we get it.

Every design begins with the things that inspire us, whether it's a beloved fantasy trope, a nostalgic game, a cosy reading afternoon or one of those little inside jokes only fellow nerds will understand.

Our goal has always been to create fun, thoughtful merchandise that helps people celebrate the things that make them happy.

And somewhere along the way, our little family grew, too.

We welcomed our beautiful son into the world, bringing a whole new kind of adventure into our lives.

Today, we're still navigating the challenges of chronic illness, learning as we go and working hard to build something that offers our family a more secure future.

We're not a big corporation with an enormous team behind us.

We're just two people with a shared dream, a love of all things nerdy, and a determination to make something wonderful out of the circumstances life has given us.

And we're incredibly proud of how far we've come.
